华盛顿离我家并不算很远，一般开车走高速也就八个小时。 不过Baily 他们仗着自己是政府拍照加防弹车，一路至少飚了100迈以上 – 当然，这和我们在伊拉克逆行交通，遇到我们车不停的就给一发12.7毫米子弹来说就是小巫见大巫了。（美军刚开始的时候是顺行交通，结果被贴上来的汽车炸弹炸了好几次，后来学聪明了，逆行交通，所有见到我们的车都要停下来，否则第一次手势警告，第二次一发子弹打引擎，第三次就直接蜂窝煤对方的车） 5个多小时以后我们就已经在约翰霍普金斯大学亚洲研究院（SAIC）的门口了。
“真的是老了”这是我见到Dugal的第一反应。
比起长得有点娘娘相但是很帅的Baily(悄悄说，这哥们如果去参加快男进8强是没问题的，不过身高也就比我高那么一点，才168…) 和一脸忠厚老实但五官分明的Delaney来说，Dugal绝对算不上帅哥。 事实上我第一次见他的时候曾怀疑过他是否有蒙古血统—他头发是类似亚洲人的纯正黑色，而不是犹太人的棕黑； 眼睛小的和我这个典型潘长江类型的小眼睛有一拼。 而且也是亚洲黑的。 不过皮肤却是正宗的白人。 身材也是，虽然在军队里的勾心斗角让年纪也就不到50的他已经两鬓斑白（相比之下我却是头发全黑，就是有点秃头，不过经常剃秃头的我也看不出来。。。:-P） 但常年的锻炼可让他的身材没怎么走形。 仍然是我记忆中在伊拉克的魁梧，至少185的身高有相称的近250磅的大肌肉块身材 – 是的，是肌肉，和他一握手就知道，NND，还是那么疼。
“Liu, it’s good, you’re here.” Dugal 见到我表现出很高兴的样子. 我也微笑着还礼，不过微笑下面我已经将他女性长辈估计骂了一圈了。 有你这么邀请的么，我心里话。
“Thanks for your invitation; Col. Dugal, but I never expected to see these many formal comrades in one day. So let’s down to business, What do you want from me? Baily talked about advising, what kind “advising” do you expect from me?” 和Delaney 还有 Baily 这俩同级不同，Dugal 是那种让我尊敬但是绝对不愿意亲近的人，既然如此，直入主题比较好。
“You ARE a smart man, Liu. I like you, from the time we were in Iraq together. I understand your choice to stay as enlist in order to fulfill your philosophy: not get involved too deep. However, your potential is far too great for an enlisted, all we know. And I want to utilize you skill. I remember there’s an ancient Chinese phrase: a man is innocent, but the jade he hides under cloth is the crime. I need the jade -- your talent, and the government of United States needs your talent.” 我一直以为 Dugal 是个单纯的武夫，看来我错了，十几年不变在大学附近打滚也让他学了不少东西啊。 连匹夫无罪怀璧其罪都知道了。
“Col. Dugal, by all respect, I understand your offer, but I have to inform you that I’m not in the US military anymore, therefore we’re not in rank system. As a civilian, I’m entitled for all Constitution rights, which means I can walk away any time I want. However, Baily did make some valuable points with me, which made me to come down here. However, I want to know, how deep the hole is, or it will get. I will make a decision after I know the picture and situate myself. Moreover, I will NOT do anything that may harm my family” 既然已经来了，就至少要知道自己要干嘛吧？
Dugal 笑了，但是我怎么看都不觉得他安好心。 “Sure, you are I’m entitled for all Constitution rights – if they still exist in couple of years.” 他扔了一叠材料给我，我快速扫了一眼，基本是中美的经济政治军事实力的对比分析。 “I think you know better than anyone in these room what’s going on. United States is declining and China is rising. Yes, as you talked decades ago, Americans are getting lazy and use to all benefits which is built on third world. But we’re changing, with all economic crisis, the government is trying to remodel the next generation in order to lead us back to the top of hill. But we need TIME. China’s economic status in percentage vs US is already surpass the level of Soviet Union in 70’s. You may be proud about it, but for the US, it is a threat. A factor may overthrow the entire game board. We need to act, or OUR children may have much harder time to regain the proud – as AMERICANS. Liu, you have sworn to defend the Constitution of United States, foreign or domestic. You’re a man of word. It’s time for you act again, as call of duty.” 在我看材料的时候Dugal 滔滔不绝的给我灌输我十几年前教导过他们的东西。 NND，我当时真不应该 嘴欠，但是没办法，他说的正是我当年和他们传输的理论，我又能反驳什么呢？
“So what’s your point? Translating them?” 我可不认为他找我来是翻译这些最基本的中美经济政治军事实力分析文件的。

看到我签了投名状，Dugal 很满意，不过也变得严肃了很多。 一时间我似乎又看到了他作为我老班长的身影。
“Liu, from the point, you have a choice, you’re either back to the military and receive a field promotion to Captain, or become a federal agent with undercover background. Your assignment is determined by your choice, but with same goal: to construct a complete picture of China, militarily, politically, economically and socially, with the most accurate information you can find. You will work with a group of people but mostly on your own. You’re free to use all your expertise in internet and up to XXX million dollars per year as funding. You report directly to me. What else do you want?” 终于开价了啊，我心里话。这个项目我做的还是不怕啥的，毕竟只要我做中国的全面分析，又不是要我设计打中国的路线 – 当然，我为我这句乌鸦嘴后悔了很久很久。。。。
“Sir, I was in the army for a decade and I’m tired to salute everyone, especially in DC. I will take the special agent position, but I do have my own demand.” 既然讨价还价，那么老子价码开高点.
“Name them.”
“First, I want to assemble the team on my own. “
“Granted, but Delaney, Baily and Smith will accompany with you.”
“no problem.” 我都对这三哥们印象都不坏。
“Secondly, my assignment is secret, everything will put under my company name as government contractor. The fund will also be transferred as government contract fee.”
“Done”
“Thirdly, I want protection for my family. If anything happens to them, I quit.”
“I will arrange them.”
“So, deal”
“Deal”
“Then have a great day, Sir, I’m going home now.” 既然说完事了，我还是像赶快回家。
“there’s no need.” Dugal 让我吃了一小惊。
“Why”
“You home will be moved to DC.”
“And my company and all employee, and their family?”
“they’re coming also.”
这让我有了一点不好的预感，下这么大本钱，究竟要干嘛？但是既然事已至此，只能见机行事了。
“Before you go, I want to ask you one thing, Liu. You’re a man with a lot of proud. I expected a lot of more time to convince you in. but you surprised me. Why?” 在我离开办公室之前，Dugal 问到。
“As you said, I have sworn to defend the Constitution of United States, foreign or domestic, but I never thought I will involve in this deep. Still, you’re right, I’m a man of word.” 这是我离开前给他留下的话。
走出办公室大楼，我抬头看看了SAIC的校园，SAIC我曾经向往的地方，它的汉语系硕士 曾 与我擦肩而过。 这所学校里还有布热津斯基等让我很向往的老师，但是现在身临其境的我却感到无比压抑。 似乎天空的密云也在反映着我的坏心情。 我正无目的的漫步在街上的时候，一辆黑色福特又停在我的身边，车窗摇下我一看是Baily 和 Delaney.
“hi, dude, we’re off clock now, wanna to see the new house we get you? We’re neighbor now!” 这俩哥们让我真不知道是大智若愚还是深藏不露，不过也好，和朋友在一起总是快乐的。即使它会是如此的短暂。
沿着Sunset Ave. 黑色福特沿着车流向着夕阳飞驰而去。
